Founded in 1996, Keshet's mission is "Rooted in dance, mentorship, and a creative space for the arts, Keshet activates community and fosters unlimited possibilities through education, engagement, innovation, and the pursuit of justice." Keshet celebrates the art of dance and is a welcoming home for the intersection of the arts, artists, and audience; actuating a flourishing environment for empowered individuals, nurtured communities, and sustained equity. While based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Keshet actively provides programming throughout the state of New Mexico and tours and conducts residencies regionally and globally. Keshet's philosophy is that dance opens doors, and access to these doors should be available to all, regardless of social, economic, situational and/or physical limitations. As such, Keshet programming actively focuses on reaching students who are homeless, incarcerated, living below the economic poverty line and those who live with physical and/or developmental disabilities. Keshet is built upon the philosophy that professional art should be deeply rooted in community engagement. Keshet's core values of inclusion, excellence, personal growth, authenticity, fluidity, and opportunity support this philosophy, propelling Keshet's professional dance company and its comprehensive education engagement programs and curriculum permeating a wide scope of social service and educational avenues in New Mexico and beyond. With the contemporary dance company (Keshet Dance Company) at the heart of the organization's work, Keshet operates multiple programs falling into three broad categories: Education and Engagement (classes, performances, touring, etc); Ideas and Innovation Community (arts business resources, support and residency programs connecting to the Creative Economy); and Arts and Justice Initiatives (direct service, research, evaluation, and community connectivity focusing specifically within the realm of juvenile justice).
