Technical Assistance for Community-led Reef Conservation and ManagementLong-term goals: Support sustainable coastal resource management by integrating Western science with traditional and local knowledge systems, supporting communities to make informed decisions that align with their cultural values and environmental stewardship goals. 2023 summary of accomplishments:Provided technical support to communities in Ulithi Atoll to develop sustainable reef management plans integrating Western science with traditional knowledge. Conducted 5 community meetings, conducted 7 focus groups on ecological and cultural impacts of spearfishing, reported results of a well-being survey to 4 communities, and trained 15 youth leaders in documenting traditional management practices.

Scientific ResearchLong-term goals: Provide data, data analysis and interpretation on status of reef and nearshore ecosystems and organisms to support decision-making of local communities.2023 summary of accomplishments:In 2023, we carried out two trips to Ulithi Atoll, Yap State, FSM, involving 14 team members from the U.S. and 16 local support team members. We collected and analyzed data on coral health, benthic community structure, reef fish abundance and size structure, water quality, coral heterotophy, trophodynamics, genetic connectivity, coral metabolomics, and photogrammetry across 24 reefs.

Education and OutreachLong-term goals: Support the documentation and preservation of culture and traditional practices by creating media, art, and educational materials in collaboration with local communities to share with local communities, the general public, and policymakers. 2023 summary of accomplishments:In 2023, OPOR worked with the Ulithi communities to create a wide-breadth of community-led media outputs. This included capturing 50 curated photographs, interviewing 25 community members to create 7 podcast episodes for release in 2025, and developing student and teacher editions of a coral reef educational booklet, distributed to schools in Ulithi with plans for expansion on the main island of Yap, FSM.
