This was our second full fiscal year with the physical site, a 40-acre farmstead located ten minutes west of Two Harbors, MN & Gichigaming (Lake Superior). During this year we continued learning about the land, how to steward the land & what that entails. Much of our spending went into costs related to the operations & upkeep of the land & buildings currently on it. We raised our first community space, a 26-foot Mongolian yurt, on the land this year & began hosing gatherings there. We continued with our full time keeper of the vision (Executive Director), part time sanctuary administrator, director of land operations & resource consultant, all working part time. Work continued with our real estate development specialist & we worked with a landscape architectural firm, architectural firm & engineering company to prepare the site plans & documents necessary for our conditional use permit application to Lake County. The permit was granted in April 2024.We continued our highly popular partnership with watershed spa in Minneapolis - offered monthly BIPOC-only bathing sessions. We hosted three volunteer days in this fiscal year.We went on a research trip to Tanzania to make connections & build partnerships with Maji ya Chai village & the surrounding Aru-Meru region, in Mwanza which is the largest city on the shores of Lake Victoria (Nyanza), & to Dar es Salaam & Zanzibar Island, in preparation for future trips that we will lead to Tanzania. We continued our story circles as we do annually.
