Mission

In the second year of operation as a 501c3 entity, Gunther's Family continued assisting Ernesto's Sanctuary (also referred to as Ernesto's House of Cats), an NGO registered in Cremona, Italy, with managing donations for the animal sanctuary and clinic they operate in Syria. Gunther's Family has an OFAC license to allow donors to use PayPal and Wells Fargo bank to give to the Sanctuary. Gunther's family received significantly more in donations in 2023 than in 2021, largely in response to the February 6, 2023 earthquake in Turkey and Syria, which caused damage at the Sanctuary and surrounding area. Ernesto's engaged in extensive animal rescue and humanitarian work in their community and beyond in the earthquake's aftermath and received extensive media coverage in doing so. Funds not directly used for earthquake relief and repair of the sanctuary went to increase service capacity such as equipment, vet supplies, food, and staffing. We also received major donations from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), SPCA International, and PETA for the first time, as well as a our first corporate matching grants. As in 2022, Gunther's Family received donations earmarked for the Sanctuary and then sent those funds to the Sanctuary's office in Italy to help fund its charitable activities. Gunther's Family also advised the Sanctuary on improving its donor management and social media presence (its main fundraising activity), and the challenges that have come with increased revenue and visibility (such as responding to "spoof" accounts and other scams using our social media content). Gunther's Family worked with the Sanctuary to find and hire an EU-based attorney to address any relevant EU sanctions matters. Finally, Gunther's Family regularly communicated with the Sanctuary to ensure that its activities are in compliance with all applicable OFAC and IRS requirements. Gunther's Family makes all donors aware that funds earmarked for other entities are the property of Gunther's Family and subject to the discretion of the board in making any grants to other entities.
