Ideagarden Institute Incorporated

Ideagarden Institute is a non-profit social venture incubator, established in 2021, that is transforming the way we nurture and develop the next generation of diverse food system innovators and their enterprises. Ideagarden provides a unique greenhouse environment in which emerging entrepreneurs can grow their novel food system ideas from seed to sustainable enterprise. The greenhouse model provides an ecosystem of resources, strategic guidance and catalytic capital to enable entrepreneurs and their initiatives to flourish. Ideagardens flagship initiativethe first to emerge from its greenhouse Plant Futurescontinued to grow meaningfully in size, scope and impact. In 2023, Plant Future engaged over 3,104 students and expanded its Student Chapters Network to 36 universities, with 68% being female-founded and led. The year began with a two-day communal learning and networking event, the Plant Futures Symposium, featuring over 30 esteemed thought leaders and speakers, including thought leaders Marion Nestle and Chef Michel Nischan, attracting 280 attendees in person and over 400 virtually. This event showcased our international network of Plant Futurists and set the stage for continued growth and impact. Another highlight of 2023 was the launch of the Career and Leadership webinar series which provided students with opportunities to learn from Plant Futurists through small-group settings, offering mentorship, networking, and valuable insights. We also piloted the Plant Futures Forum, which explored diverse facets of sustainable, plant-centric food systems and lifestyle through events covering topics like sustainable agriculture, cooking methods, and food healing. This learning series catered to both seasoned advocates and newcomers, enriching the communitys knowledge and commitment to sustainability. In addition, Plant Futures launched several initiatives to further support students, including a Mentorship Program, virtual event series, and job fair collaborations. These initiatives aimed to equip students with the networks, skills, and resources necessary for impactful careers in the food systems and plant-centric food sectors. Notably, the Plant Futures Challenge Lab was offered at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Harvard University, involving 135 students and 28 partners. In addition to running the challenge lab, we launched another way for students to gather the tools, networks, and experience necessary to make a meaningful impact in the sustainable food space through accelerated projects in the Plant Futures Impact Lab. Furthermore, we received a grant from the UC Office of the President to launch a cross-campus course on Plant-Centric Food Systems in Spring 2025. Finally, our expansion into Mexico began in 2023, and highlighted the countrys rich culinary heritage and the growing plant-based movement, engaging a motivated community of students passionate about sustainability.Ideagarden Institute also played a key role facilitating the Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award at the 2023 Natural Products Expo, held in Anaheim, CA. The GSPV award seeks to support the emergence of innovators who are accelerating the transition to a plant-centric food system. The 2023 prize was awarded to Simpli, an innovator in food products that are produced with regenerative, organic principles. Members of the Ideagarden team facilitated the application and selection process and participated in the majestic awards ceremony at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Institute partnered with the Future of Food Education Fund to host a second annual cohort of young BIPOC leaders during the summer. This six-week, immersive educational program helps prepare future college students to prepare for careers involved in changing the food system. The program takes place on the UC Berkeley campus and at the offices of Bay Area food companies. Ideagardens team provided curriculum design, mentorship and instruction to the initiative.In 2023, Ideagardens board of directors evolved to include Fazeela Rashid, an experienced company builder and impact investor with an interest and expertise in Food Systems.
