Mission

Atlantic Black Box is committed to expanding the field of historical recovery. We empower communities throughout the Northeast to research and reckon with the region's active role in colonization and slavery while recentering the stories of its historically marginalized groups. Burying New England's history of racial violence and oppression was the work of many hands. At Atlantic Black Box, we believe it will take just as many hands to uncover the truth and to build a culture of repair. Our organization provides communities with the tools, resources, and support needed to recover and make sense of suppressed history through public programming, research assistance, community dialogue, place-based education, artistic expression, and advocacy.

In 2023, Atlantic Black Box partnered with the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous, and Tribal Populations to carry out the Place Justice Initiative, a statewide truth-seeking and historical recovery project. Through a broad-based investigation into racial harms and an investment in restorative dialogue, Place Justice has engaged communities throughout the state in asking, Whose memory is visible and celebrated and whose has been erased or misrepresented? How do the politics and practices of public remembrance and forgetting continue to impact communities today? Other important partnerships included Art in the Wake, a two-day symposium in May 2023 organized by Indigo Arts Alliance, the Center for the Study of Global Slavery (Smithsonian Institute), and Atlantic Black Box that brought together artists, curators, and historians from around the world to engage in dialogue around the history and legacies of slavery and forced migration; and Passages in American Art, a fundamental reinterpretation of Portland Museum of Art's collection that platforms multiple voices, reveals new ways of looking at some of the museum's most beloved works of art, and invites community members to drive the conversation. In 2023, Atlantic Black Box additionally served as event co-organizer for Maine Black Voices Advocacy Day, the State of Black Maine Symposium, and Mapping Maine's Black Heritage. In addition to programming, ABB was involved in many projects over the course of 2023 involving public education, curriculum development, professional development, advising, and community engagement.
