Our grassroots campaigns have achieved significant victories, including ending the state's recreational spring bear hunt; defeating a proposal to prematurely downlist wolves on the state endangered species list; and passing a rule to reduce unsustainable levels of cougar mortality.

Rulemaking, Litigation, and Other Legal Actions: We hold the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife accountable to the law, its mandate, and its responsibilities as a public trustee. We draft rulemaking petitions and proposed legislation and file litigation when other methods fail. We have advanced rulemaking petitions to end the state's overhunting of bears and cougars and to reduce the number of wolves the state kills. We sue the department for its refusal to follow the State Environmental Policy Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, the Public Records Act, and other statutory directives.

Building Coalitions and Strategic Alliances: We formed and now lead a powerful coalition of more than 60 local, state, and national fish and wildlife advocacy groups that work together to reform state wildlife management. We host a yearly coalition convention, hold weekly meetings, and coordinate a listserv. Our coalition has brought advocates together to work toward common goals and amplified our voice before the state wildlife commission, the legislature, and the governor. Meanwhile, we advance protections for fish and wildlife through strategic alliances with commissioners, legislators, and members of the executive branch.
