The Midwifery Model of Care prioritizes personalized, hands-on care for clients throughout the childbirth journey, including before, during, and after birth. Midwives, skilled healthcare providers, provide a range of services, including pregnancy tests, prenatal care, and education on various aspects of childbirth and postpartum care. They approach childbirth as a natural process rather than a medical condition. This approach aims to ensure the safe and confident birthing of babies while providing essential support to pregnant individuals and their families. Everyone should have access to high-quality, attentive, and respectful care. The midwifery model, known for its low-tech, high-caring approach, delivers positive outcomes for low-risk women and families facing vulnerabilities. Pregnant individuals under midwifery care are valued participants in decision-making processes and are actively involved in their care. The midwifery model focuses on avoiding unnecessary interventions during labor, maintaining the normalcy of childbirth, and addressing unique needs often overlooked by traditional medical models. At the Juneau Family Birth Center, the care journey begins with a consultation to explore services, tour the facility, and address any queries. Subsequent appointments with a midwife allow for in-depth discussions on medical history, pregnancy adjustments, and early pregnancy guidance. Ongoing prenatal visits, led by a team of staff midwives, ensure clients and their families are acquainted with all potential birth attendants. During labor, the designated midwife supports the client at the birth center or home, providing continuous care through labor, delivery, and postpartum. Following discharge, a series of home visits and office appointments provides comprehensive postpartum care, aiding healing, fostering breastfeeding, and guiding the family through the initial weeks after birth. The Juneau Family Birth Center firmly believes that everyone should have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial status. JFBC has a donated care program available to all clients who qualify. This program is available on a sliding fee scale for people with incomes up to 200% of the National Poverty Guidelines, adjusted for Alaska. Discounts range from 10% to 100%. All new clients of the Birth Center are informed of the donated care program and any wish to participate are given an application to determine eligibility. Benefits provided through the program include coverage for prenatal, birth, and postpartum home and office visits, lab work, nursing supplies, and supplements. It's worth noting that JFBC is the only practice in Juneau that offers discounted and donated healthcare to uninsured pregnant women. In addition to the donated care program, JFBC offers financial counseling and payment plans. The staff members are well-versed in applying for Denali Care where appropriate and work tirelessly to guide clients toward community and insurance resources.
