THE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE IMMERSION NEST IS A MODEL THAT HAS PROVEN GREAT SUCCESS FOR COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE WORLD AT CREATING NEW SPEAKERS OF ENDANGERED LANGUAGES AND PROVEN TO IMPACT WELLNESS OUTCOMES FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. TARGETING THIS AGE GROUP WILL ENABLE US TO CREATE A GENERATION OF BABIES WHO WILL GROW UP HEARING AND SPEAKING HUPA LANGUAGE WITH EACH OTHER, THEIR TEACHERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. WE HAVE SEEN SUCH AMAZING PROGRESS WITH OUR STUDENTS DURING OUR FIRST YEAR INCLUDING SOME OF THE BABIES SPEAKING THEIR VERY FIRST WORDS (OF ANY LANGUAGE) IN HUPA. WE SERVED 9 STUDENTS AGED 2 YEARS TO 4 YEARS OLD IN A FULL TIME PROGRAM MONDAY-THURSDAY FOR 5 HOURS A DAY, FROM OCTOBER 2024 TO MAY 2025. OUR CURRICULUM IS CENTERED AROUND HUPA STORIES, SONGS AND INTERACTIONS WITH THE NATURAL WORLD IN DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE WAYS CONDUCTED PRIMARILY IN NA:TINIXWE MIXINE:WHE, THE HUPA LANGUAGE.

AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR WORK TO CREATE HUPA LANGUAGE CURRICULUM FOR USE IN OUR PROGRAMS AND FOR SHARING WITH OUR LARGER COMMUNITY. AS THERE HAVE BEEN NO FULL-TIME HUPA LANGUAGE IMMERSION SCHOOLS, WE HAVE HAD TO ALMOST START FROM SCRATCH IN CREATING BOOKS, SONGS AND OTHER CURRICULUM FOR OUR PROGRAM STUDENTS AND OTHER LEARNERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP HUPA LANGUAGE CURRICULUM DURING THE YEAR, CONTINUING TO LEVEL IT UP FOR THE STUDENTS AS THEY GROW.

IN LATE SUMMER OF 2024 AND EARLY SUMMER 2025, WE COMPLETED OUR 8TH AND 9TH SUMMER OF PUTTING ON OUR ANNUAL XONTEHL-TAW IMMERSION SUMMER SCHOOL FOR SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN (K-4). THESE CAMPS PROVIDE LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL PROGRAMMING FOR OLDER STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE LITTLE TO NO SUCH PROGRAMMING IN LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND WHO THRIVE WHEN THEY ARE IMMERSED IN OUR HUPA WAYS OF BEING. OUR SUMMER SCHOOL ALSO SERVES AS A TRAINING GROUND FOR FUTURE HUPA LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND PROMOTES THE LOVE AND USE OF OUR ANCESTRAL LANGUAGE AND TRADITIONS. WE HAVE ALSO INTRODUCED A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 5TH-8TH GRADES AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO CAN HELP AT CAMP AND MENTOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS IN THEIR HUPA LANGUAGE LEARNING.
