The Jack Reid Foundations activities in 2023 focused its efforts on raising awareness about bullying. Following our April launch, we initiated a Listening Tour, engaging with researchers and academics, social emotional learning (SEL) providers, and school leaders to explore the latest research and best practices in the anti-bullying space. These conversations informed our programmatic strategy, which included writing op-eds to highlight effective bullying prevention strategies, attending the World Anti-Bullying Forum, and developing a strategy to advocate for stronger legal protections for students.LISTENING TOURAfter launching the JRF in 2023, we embarked on a Listening Tour, speaking with bullying-prevention experts, academics, researchers, social-emotional learning providers, and administrators from secondary schools across the country. The more than 100 conversations that we have had to date (as of October 15, 2024) provided invaluable insights into proven methods for combating bullying and helped shape the ongoing development of JRFs programs.AWARENESS AND EDUCATIONIn 2023, we worked to raise awareness about bullying through the media and with the launch of our website, www.jackreidfoundation.org, which serves as a resource hub for parents, school administrators, and community members, offering information and tools to address bullying effectively. In May 2023, JRF founders Elizabeth and Bill Reid shared Jacks story and the importance of addressing bullying with Good Morning America and ABC Nightline. Their story was also featured by major outlets including The New York Times, New York Post, CNN, and The Independent.In September 2023, the Reids authored an op-ed in USA Today titled Bullying at school cost our son his life. Heres how you can protect your own child, urging parents to take an active role in protecting their children from bullying. In October 2023, the Reids attended the World Anti-Bullying Forum, further advancing the work of the JRF.PUBLIC POLICY AND LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACYIn 2023, JRF analyzed state anti-bullying laws and initiated discussions with lawmakers in New York, advocating for expanded protections that include non-public school students. In preparation for lobbying efforts during the 2024 New York State legislative session, JRF filed IRS Form 5768 in November 2023 to elect Section 501(h) status and retained a lobbying firm in December 2023.Through these efforts, JRF aims to ensure that all students across the U.S. are equally protected from the devastating effects of bullying. We have continued our Listening Tour, public advocacy and working with experts in the field during 2024.(FORM 990, PART IX, LINE 11B)The JRF received $2,000,000 as part of a settlement agreement related to the death of Jack Reid. Pursuant to a contractual arrangement, $500,000 of that settlement amount was paid to the attorneys for the legal fees relating to the negotiation of the settlement.
