Mission

The Berkeley Public Library Foundation BPLF amplifies the public investment to make a great public library extraordinary. We believe libraries connect us, build our community, expand our world, and change lives. To those ends, we provide funds and ongoing advocacy to advance the Library's mission and goals. We provide the resources needed for innovations, literacy projects, and building improvements not already covered by bond measures and City taxes.

Program 1: BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS. The BPLF actively supports the Berkeley Public Library in revamping and renovating its spaces. Current efforts include upgrading furniture, technology, and lighting at the four neighborhood libraries, redesigning the Central Librarys 4th-floor story room, and completing refurbishments at the North and Claremont Branches. Additionally, new laptop kiosks have been installed at the West and North Branches, a phone charging station has been added at the Central Library, and a comfortable social service area has been established to enhance community outreach efforts.

Program 2. INNOVATION & INCLUSION. The BPLF advances the Berkeley Public Library's mission by supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion through librarian-led initiatives. This year, we funded sewing machines and materials for classes, which have been met with great success. We expanded the discussion book bundle series on racial equity and identity and supported a personal hygiene kit pilot project initiated by the library's first-ever social worker. Hygiene essentials like soap, shampoo, and sanitary products are available at all library locations.

Program 3. LITERACY. The BPLF continues to support literacy through Berkeley Builds Readers, which extends literacy resources, tutoring, and storytime programming to underserved areas. New creative software and a Moog music machine have enhanced digital and art literacy. The Foundation's Annual Authors Dinner, celebrating local authors and the Bay Area's literary history, brought together over 250 people to honor 21 authors and celebrate the Claremont Librarys Centennial Anniversary while also serving as an important fundraiser for the library.
