New Hanover County Community Justice Center Inc

The New Hanover County Community Justice Center (CJC) was established as a 501(c)(3) organization on January 9, 2024 and is led by a 12-member Board of Directors. It brings together more than two dozen officials from the New Hanover County District Attorney's Office (DA), area law enforcement, and area non-profits to serve victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offenses, and youth violence. Located immediately next to the New Hanover County Courthouse in the Harrelson Center, the CJC offers comprehensive resources in a collaborative environment. Our mission is to allow victims to live free from violence and abuse and hold offenders accountable by providing easily accessible, coordinated, and comprehensive services in a single location. (continued on Schedule O)In just the first year of operation, the employees and partner agencies at the CJC were responsible for handling hundreds of criminal investigations and prosecutions in some of the toughest cases in the system at both the misdemeanor and felony level. A first of its kind domestic violence courtroom, run and maintained by DA's office employees working at the CJC, was created to give special care to these sensitive cases and routinely handle between 30-40 cases each week. Another courtroom dedicated to handling all offenses in New Hanover County involving offenders under the age of 18, convenes once a week to handle 15-25 cases. Additionally, over 200 individuals seeking civil relief from domestic violence protection orders were seen at the CJC to receive assistance in filing these petitions and to learn about and obtain, as needed, services to support them.The CJC strives to tear down the barriers between criminal, civil and family courts and seeks to be a one-stop shop for hope, healing and justice. Through continuous education and training and by raising community awareness, the CJC seeks to reduce and prevent crime by supporting survivors as they break free from the cycle of violence.
